Excellent idea directionally. But I strongly quibble with two things.

Great leaders do focus on Who. Some of the best leadership books I have read such as Warren Bennis talk about how CEOs do concentrate on what key people are doing key things. It is central to great management to be able to build a great team and know who to give What to. Otherwise you're dead.

Second, the last question is not When, it is How. When is all about accountability. Knowing What is getting done is insufficient except in highly conceptual thinking. If you're the Chairman of Shell, sure. How is the death knell of course. Insecure or inexperienced leaders need to know How. -- Jeffrey

[...] Nowadays I’m an all out Mac user but having run a Windows security software business before I am always fascinated by the various strategic moves Microsoft makes. An article from EDS Fellow Randy Mears poses an interesting question that is relevant for many technology businesses large and small: What trends do you jump on and which do you ignore? Given their practically unlimited resources, Microsoft has the means of hedging their bets in a massive scale and keep a finger in most technology pies from video downloads (MS Video), music (Zune) to social networking (Wallop). Or as Zoli mentioned, the also run blogging tool, the Windows Live Writer. They also have as many enterprise focused business ventures as they have consumer-oriented ones. In fact there is hardly any facet of the technology business that Microsoft does not enter. [...]

Web to mobile, maybe... but I'm wondering when we will see real chunks of cash flowing into "mobile-web-physical ventures". Very few consumer businesses have found truly usefull and innovative ways to connect web, mobile applications and physical items. Most succesfull examples are still limited to B2B, such as RFID enabled supply chains etc.

Warm hello from the Lake of Geneva, Switzerland, Alex
